Asphalt is measured and billed by the short ton (2,000 lbs). Hot mix asphalt (HMA) compacts when rolled with a heavy vibratory roller. In the paving industry, compacted asphalt has a standard density of 145 pounds per cubic foot (approx. 2.0 to 2.2 tons per cubic yard).
2. Real-World Worked Example
Suppose you are paving a standard 2-car residential driveway measuring 40 feet long by 20 feet wide with a 3-inch compacted thickness:
- Square Footage: 40 ft × 20 ft = 800 sq ft.
- Cubic Feet: 800 sq ft × 0.25 ft (3 inches) = 200 cu ft.
- Weight in Pounds: 200 cu ft × 145 lbs/cu ft = 29,000 lbs.
- Base Asphalt Tonnage: 29,000 lbs ÷ 2,000 = 14.5 tons.
- Recommended Order (10% waste): 14.5 tons × 1.10 = 15.95 tons (Order 16.0 tons).
3. Standard Thickness Guidelines
Choosing the correct thickness is critical for longevity and preventing cracking:
