How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage
Asphalt is ordered from mixing plants by weight in short tons (2,000 lbs). Because loose asphalt compacts by 20–25% when rolled by heavy vibrating machinery, calculations must use compacted in-place density (standard industry benchmark: 145 lbs per cubic foot).
The Asphalt Tonnage Formula
Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)Volume (cu ft) = Area (sq ft) × (Thickness in inches ÷ 12)Asphalt Tons = [Volume (cu ft) × 145 lb/cu ft] ÷ 2000 lbs/tonRecommended Asphalt Thickness by Project
| Project Type | Compacted Asphalt Depth | Gravel Base Depth | Coverage per Ton |
|---|---|---|---|
| Residential Driveway (Standard) | 2.5 – 3.0 inches | 6 – 8 inches | 55 – 66 sq ft |
| Heavy SUV / RV Driveway | 3.5 – 4.0 inches | 8 – 10 inches | 41 – 47 sq ft |
| Commercial Parking Lot | 4.0 – 5.0 inches | 8 – 12 inches | 33 – 41 sq ft |
| Walkway / Golf Cart Path | 2.0 inches | 4 – 6 inches | 82.8 sq ft |
Frequently Asked Questions
How much asphalt do I need for a 2-car driveway?â–¼
A standard 2-car residential driveway is approximately 20 feet wide by 40 feet long (800 sq ft). At a standard 3-inch compacted depth, you will need approximately 8.2 tons of asphalt without waste, or 9.0 tons with a recommended 10% waste factor (approx. 1 dump truck load).
What is the standard density of compacted asphalt?â–¼
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) has a standard compacted density of 145 pounds per cubic foot (approx. 2.0 to 2.2 tons per cubic yard). At 1 inch thickness, 1 ton of compacted asphalt covers approximately 165.5 square feet.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?â–¼
For residential passenger vehicle driveways, a compacted thickness of 2.5 to 3 inches over a 6-to-8-inch compacted crushed stone gravel base is standard. For commercial parking lots or heavy truck driveways, 4 to 6 inches of asphalt is required.
How much does asphalt cost per ton?â–¼
As of 2026, hot mix asphalt material costs typically range from $100 to $150 per ton at the asphalt batch plant. Full contractor installation (including grading, aggregate base, and rolling compaction) typically ranges from $4.50 to $8.00 per square foot.
